Moisture in compressed air can cause severe damage. Malfunctions in a production plant, costly down time, higher rejection rates and increased quality control expenditures all have a negative impact on profits.

For this reason, efficient and application specific compressed air treatment is absolutely essential. However, to guarantee process reliability, several compressed air characteristics need to be accurately monitored.

The precise measurement of humidity and flow rate provide the foundation for various analyses, documentation and decisions in connection with compressed air systems. Possible overloading (i.e. excessive air velocities) or malfunctions can be detected quickly and reliably and this allows for the most economical optimization of plant components. Moreover, the exact consumption percentages at different stages of production is of great value in making fact-based business management decisions.

In addition, the flow rate measurement will indicate the loss of compressed air due to leakage - another critical economic factor considering that every third compressor only runs to compensate for the loss of air!

How does it work?

[A] The sensor design revolves around an upper and lower electrode with a porous polymer layer in between. Depending on the amount of partial water vapor pressure, more or less water molecules will penetrate the porous polymer layer. The capacity of the sensor changes as a result, and this change is converted to a humidity value and then displayed.

[B] The calorimetric principle for flow measurement is based on two temperature sensors in close contact with the flow but thermal insulated from each other. One of the two sensors is constantly heated and the cooling effect of the air flow is used to monitor the flow rate. The calorimetric flow meter can achieve relatively high accuracy even at low flow rates.


[1] Dew point measurement utilizing capacitive polymer sensors ([A]) provide users with measurement accuracies to within ± 0.9 °F.

[2] Pressure sensors featuring stainless steel, thin-film technology are available up to 870 psig and sense relative pressure of gases or liquids to ≤ ± 0.5% accuracy.

[3] Flow sensors using calorimetric measurement ([B]) detect flow rates from 0.12 to 23,275 scfm with an accuracy of ± 3%.

[4] A variety of monitoring options are available to suit every need, all of which use the latest technologies and communication protocols for easy integration.
